Professor Shenuka Singh, a distinguished academic in Dentistry at UKZN, has been appointed as the Deputy Chairperson of the National Health Research Ethics Council (NHREC) of South Africa - a significant milestone in her career.
The appointment, made by the Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla, is testament to Singh’s expertise and unwavering commitment to advancing research ethics in South Africa.
Said Singh: ‘I am truly humbled and honoured to receive recognition at such a high level in research ethics. This ministerial appointment underscores the critical role ethical considerations play in healthcare research.’
The NHREC has a pivotal role in overseeing and ensuring the ethical conduct of research involving both humans and animals. As Deputy Chair, Singh will provide leadership, guiding the operations of the council and shaping its role and mandate.
‘This appointment follows a rigorous application process. I am dedicated to contributing to the ethical oversight of research activities in South Africa. It is a responsibility I take very seriously,’ she said.
With two PhDs, one in dental public health and the other in clinical and research ethics, Singh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role. Actively engaged in research and supervision in the fields of dental public and research ethics, she has presented at both national and international conferences and meetings.
‘I am particularly honoured to represent UKZN in this prestigious position. It underscores the University’s commitment to nurturing leaders in various fields, including research ethics,’ she said.
The NHREC comprises 15 members, including academics, researchers and stakeholders dedicated to upholding ethical standards in research.
Furthermore, Singh’s participation in the World Health Organization joint working groups Regulation and Safety Unit and Health Ethics and Governance Unit where she contributed to the development of a benchmarking tool for research ethics oversight in 2021, emphasises her international standing in the field. She is also an appointed member of the Ethics in Dental Research Committee at the International Association of Dental Research
UKZN’s Dean and Head of School of Health Sciences Professor Percy Mashige congratulated Singh on the significant achievement which, he says, reflects the University’s dedication to excellence and leadership in research ethics.
